The results of the research of faculty of the Institute of Entrepreneurship is expressed in a series of publications, most of which are in the form of books and textbooks to help students' education at the UNWE.

The participation of members of the Institute in international research networks and projects, as well as the active participation of the department as a co-organizer of international conferences on entrepreneurship provide opportunities for the dissemination of knowledge generated in the department through publications in editions with the international distribution.

Conferences

The Institute is an active partner in the organized by the Bulgarian Association for Management Development and Entrepreneurship (BAMDE) international conference, which already has nine editions:

Entrepreneurial/Managerial Innovative Strategies and Behaviour in Global Multicultural Environment, 2014;

These conferences have been a great success and not only attractive forum for European researchers, but also for researchers from North and South America and Asia, because of the very good atmosphere conducive to discussions and informal communication. The total number of participants is between 60 and 70, but the presented countries are about 20. The participants in these conferences are world-renowned scolars as David Smallbone, Ken O'Neill, Hans Pichler, Bogdan Piasecki, Alain Fayolle, David Watkins, Antti Haahti, Raymond Saner as well as representatives of countries that are at the very beginning of entrepreneurial studies as Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Russia, Colombia. These conferences provide an opportunity to establish a dialogue between very diverse research experience and background of research scholars from across Europe and representatives from non-European countries.

The Institute leads the specialty Entrepreneurship (Bachelor degree) and the Master degree programme in Entrepreneurship (with specialisation in Family Entrepreneurship).

The specialty Entrepreneurship was founded in 2007 and is one of the pioneers in Europe. It was created in response to business needs and increasing demands on university education.

The Master degree programme in Family Entrepreneurship is implemented in partnership with the Family Business Network (FBN) in Bulgaria to establish a fund to cover the costs for the participation of lecturers with international recognition in the field.

The Institute of Entrepreneurship was established in 2017 in accordance with the new Higher Education Act and is a successor of the established in 1997 Institute of Entrepreneurship Development, the latter being a pioneer in research and consulting in the field of entrepreneurship and SMEs in Bulgaria

The new institute also integrates the academic functions that have been performed since its start by the Department of Entrepreneurship, which since 2006 provides a methodological learning process for entrepreneurship at the University of National and World Economy with the aim of building highly skilled entrepreneurs and managers in a dynamic business environment – including international and multicultural.

The academic staff of the institute includes young, with potential for development assistants as well as lecturers with lots of experience in teaching, research and consultancy in the field of entrepreneurship and small business - a professor, three associate professors and chief assistant professors (all with PhD degrees). Some of them hold important positions in national and international organizations supporting entrepreneurship.

In his work the academic staff relies on the results achieved in national and international projects, training and consulting of firms.

The main research interests of the members of the institute are in: creating and managing a new business, including family business, strategic and entrepreneurial management and growth of small and medium-sized firms, entrepreneurial culture, art and creative entrepreneurship, clusters, subcontractors and entrepreneurial business networks, digital business, psychology of entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship in international environment. The institute participates in the training of bachelors, masters and doctoral students, as well as entrepreneurs and managers in practice. They have developed contacts with related institutes and departments at universities from different countries.

The institute is well recognizable not only nationally, but especially internationally through publications, participation in international conferences and seminars, national and international projects. Members of the institute have taught American students from Florida International University in Miami, Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan, as well as students and entrepreneurs from technical universities in Mexico, entrepreneurs from Serbia, etc.

Together with the Bulgarian Association for Management Development and Entrepreneurship (BAMDE), the institute is a co-organizer of the annual international conference on entrepreneurship with the participation of prominent researchers from dozens of countries.

Family Entrepreneurship

The Master Degree Programme in Family Entrepreneurship is created:

In response to the growing role of the family business (FB) in the economy and society, taking into account the specific characteristics and needs of the family business, especially in management, development and succession;
On the base of many years of accumulated experience in research, training, consulting entrepreneurship (including family businesses) and in particular in Entrepreneurship bachelor degree programme at the UNWE.

The programme targets that the master students:

To gain knowledge and skills for a dynamic competitive behavior, including international business environment;
To get acquainted with the latest developments in research and consulting in the field of family business;
To understand and manage relationships within families, between family and business, family (majority) and minority (non-familial) shareholders;
To understand and implement the processes of management and development of family businesses as well as internationalization of their activities;
To know, plan and manage the process of succession / inheritance in family firms.

The means of achieving the objectives of the programme include:

Embedding in different disciplines domestic and foreign research results, statistics and analyzes;
Using interactive teaching methods such as management discussion, role games, case study methods, management games, simulations; "face to face" discussions with active entrepreneurs and foreign lecturers, practical experience in family companies, etc.;
Using modern technical equipment such as computer systems, multimedia systems, recording systems, techniques for virtual seminars, etc.

Knowledge and skills to ensure a successful and competitive realization of graduates

Knowledge:

About the role, importance and dynamics of FB in the economy, society and the international business context;
Prerequisites and conditions for a successful launch, management and development of a family business;
Interpersonal relationships and prevention / resolution of conflicts arising in FB;
The main sources of funding / lending and investment in FB;
Successful internationalization FB;
The main phases of the process of succession / inheritance of family business.

Skills:

Analysis and evaluation of the processes and events in the economy and society, problems and opportunities for / of FB
Considering the advantages and disadvantages of particular starting up of a FB;
Management and development of family firms taking into account the specificities and peculiarities in the application of appropriate approaches, forms and instruments;
Analysis and evaluation of interpersonal relationships within the family, between family and business, conflict prevention / management;
Analysis, evaluation, planning and management of the process of succession / inheritance in FB;
Adaptation of foreign good practice in FB accounting with the Bulgarian specific conditions;
Participation in / building business networks, including international involving FB.

Succesful master programme graduates can work as:

Participants and continuers / successors of the family company from which they arise.
Founders of the first generation of their own FB, keeping participation / disengaging from the family mother firm.
Participants in the different structures serving FB (boards, boards of directors, associations, etc.).

Entrepreneurship

The specialty Entrepreneurship e created in response to the major changes and the economic and social environment of business in the national and international context (including accession to the EU). Catalyst for this is the announcement of the EU about entrepreneurship as one of the eight competencies of Europeans and priority development of entrepreneurship education and training.

The main purpose of the Entrepreneurship specialty is to provide methodological and practical knowledge and skills to assist students with the potential to create and develop a competitive business. Besides, training in the specialty forms entrepreneurial culture, spirit and responsibility among students, enabling them to occupy other positions requiring initiative and risk-taking.

Achieving the set high goals in preparing graduates in entrepreneurship is based on the solid foundation built by:

Embedding in the learning process of research results, including reached by the personal participation of lecturers doctoral students and students;
The predominance of interactive teaching methods such as problem-oriented lectures, controlled discussions; case study method, role playing, management games, simulation method, team-work, etc.;
Involvement in the learning process of the Bulgarian and foreign entrepreneurs, including internships in the actual practice;
The use of modern technical equipment such as computer systems, multimedia systems, video cameras, recorders drives; equipment for virtual conference (workshops), etc.

Knowledge and skills that define successful professional activity of graduates in entrepreneurship

Knowledge:

About fundamental and practical oriented principles and approaches to phenomena and processes for business and society
Basic knowledge of trends in the economy, problems and solutions on a national and regional context;
Knowledge of achievements in business practices in developing countries, primarily European, and opportunities to transfer know-how and good practice in the Bulgarian context;
Knowledge of the potential and opportunities for development of entrepreneurship, existing regulations, the prerequisites for starting, managing and developing a successful (own) business, such as for vision, risk-taking, self-responsibility, etc.

Skills for:

Analysis and evaluation of processes and phenomena in the economy, analysis of business opportunities and identifying winning business idea;
Analysis and assessment of the market and competitors and identifying and developing their own competitive advantages;
Development of their own entrepreneurial and managerial competencies for successful formation, motivation and leadership of teams for reaching targeted business objectives, organizational changes and structural analyzes;
Development of business plans for starting a new (own) business and basic skills for subsequent effective management and successful development including the development of projects;
The formation and development of entrepreneurial networks with the stakeholders (state and public support organizations, customers, suppliers, banks, trainers, consultants and other institutions.), Including partners from other countries.

Areas of career

Areas of realization of the graduates are:

Starting up your own business (the the enterprising due to the practical nature of the curriculum can make it even while studying), making students with potential in modern, competent entrepreneurs;
Others may work as corporate entrepreneurs (intrapreneurs) in larger companies, supporting the generation, transfer and commercialization of innovation, often working in areas such as marketing, R & D, human resources and finance;
Viable is the orientation of graduates to work in small and medium-sized companies (99% of all companies in the country) as a multi-specialists who after accumulating some experience can also take the path of their own business;
The graduates can work successfully in communities, councils and municipalities in activities related to business, and civil society (PPP). High quality general and professional training in the specialty allows graduates to work in EU structures and projects;
After completion of the bachelor's degree, students can continue their studies in the Master's degree, where to deepen their knowledge and skills in a specific selected area, forming their personal and professional development.

The “Entrepreneurship” Department was established to assist methodically the educational process in Entrepreneurship discipline in UNWE with regard to training highly qualified entrepreneurs and managers in a dynamic business environment, international and multicultural as well.

The Department team comprises of both young lecturers with potential for development, as well as experienced in teaching, research and business consulting ones – a professor, an assoc. professor, a doctor, and assistants working on their dissertations. Some of them hold important positions in national and international organizations, which support entrepreneurship.

In its work, the lecturers’ team steps on the results, gained during national and international projects, trainings and companies’ consulting. In this aspect, the Department works closely with the Institute for Entrepreneurship at UNWE, where some of the lecturers carry out research activities too.

The main scientific interests of the Department lecturers’ team are in areas such as: setting up and development of new business; strategic entrepreneurship management and growth of SMEs; entrepreneurship culture; clusters, subcontracting and networking; entrepreneurship psychology. The Department participates in the training of Bachelors, Masters and PhDs as well as entrepreneurs and managers. It maintains contacts with related departments and specialties in universities in different courtiers.
